Unearth an Ancient Machine
Take a journey across time and discover the archeological secrets of our world! This 60-minute, hands-on workshop explores how ancient civilizations worked with the aid of simple machines. In a time when electricity was only lightning in the sky and communications were carried by word of mouth, simple machines ruled the earth!
Planets & Moons
Explore the farthest reaches of our solar system and create a lunar eclipse on our home planet. Kids size up the difference between the Earth and its moon. They simulate how gravitational pull affects a probe in space and practice their grasp of gravity! They will take home a Gravity Assisted Launcher. SOL K.8, K.9; 1.6; 4.5, 4.6; 6.2, 6.3
Space Phenomena
Junior astronauts probe the mysteries of meteors and bounce around satellite light! This phenomenal class explains spectacular space events. Kids learn how to explore faraway objects with telescopes and satellites and gain insight on the lights in the night sky. Kids will take home a space telescope to explore with at home!*$15 dry ice materials fee
Sun & Stars
This stellar class leads kids through the life cycles of the stars! They learn about our star, the Sun, and see stardust form. From baby star nebulae to spotting supernovas, children see how our star makes waves across the spectrum! SOL K.10; 1.6; 3.8; 3.11; 4.8; 6.2
Dry Ice Capades
Students manipulate matter in all of its three states! They melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice! They watch metal become liquid, and see water become a solid as dry ice sublimates - going straight from a solid to a gas! They will take home a color changing cup. SOL K.1,.2; 2.1,.2.3; 3.1,.9; 5.1,.4 *$15 dry ice materials fee
Chem In a Flash
Children hop on board the chemistry express for a high-speed science experience! They perform instantaneous experiments in this fast-paced class about split-second reactions that go like mad! Kids will get to take home a flask to start building their own chemistry set!
Super Sticky Stuff
Kids stick it to the walls and push the power of tape to the limits in this hour-long class on things that cling! They build a bond with glue and learn about the properties of different adhesives! Kids will take home a Beaker Dude to explore adhesives and start their own chemistry set!
Detective Science
Kids play detective and help crack a case! They will inspect their fingerprints, analyze mystery powders, test ink samples and create a composite from memory. They will take home a Personal Profile kit to build an identity. SOL 3.3
Bugs
Kids engross themselves in entomology! They inspect authentic insect specimens. They update their insect anatomy know-how and match up insects with their habitats. SOL K.6; K.7, K.10; 1.5; 2.4; 2.5; 3.4, 3.5; 4.2,4.3
Walloping Weather
Kids get weather wise and uncover the reason for seasons. They create three-day weather forecasts, stage a statically-charged indoor storm, and spot the sun’s invisible UV rays. SOL K.4, K.8, K.9, K.10; 1.7; 2.6, 2.7; 3.7, 3.8; 4.4, 4.6; 6.3, 6.6, 6.7
Lights…Color…Action!
In this investigation into optics, children explore the science of light and color. They observe how colored lights can blend to make white light, and how a prism can separate white light into colors. Experiments with filters and UV light provide understanding of our vision and the electromagnetic spectrum. Kids will take home a color mixer to explore colors at home!
Smelly Science
The science of scents is in the air! Children will learn about our sense of smell and put their noses to the test as they experiment with the chemistry of aromas. From human nasal passages to animal adaptations, from enticing aromas to stinky stenches, the nose knows! Kids will take home their own taste test kit to explore their sense of taste at home!
Sonic Sounds
By exploring the science of sound, children learn about sound waves and how our ears perceive them. They model the way sound moves through solids, liquids and gasses, and then experiment with making sound travel through different shapes and materials to create cool sounds with different frequencies and tones. They get to take home a tone tube. SOL K.5; 1.2
Fun-damental Forces
Kids find out about forces by doing experiments on gravity, centripetal force, and inertia. They check out a gyroscope, make cars fly down a track and do a few balancing tricks to discover how forces affect motion. Kids will take home a gravity game to keep the learning going at home!
Super Structures
Kids test out the basics of architectural design and structural engineering in this hands-on class about structures. They explore how triangles, arches, and bridges give strength to structures. They will get to take home a bridge to explore with at home!
Fantastic Fliers
Children discover how the four forces of flight help things soar into the sky. They build all kinds of paper aircraft to help them understand in a tangible, hands-on way! Kids will get to take home a Sky Hawk plane to keep exploring flight at home!
